When you have been going into clients' homes for years and years like we have, it's pretty safe to say that there isn't a whole lot that we haven't come across during that time. Whether it's existing style choices, disrepair, etc. However, this client's bathroom featured something that we had heard about, but never seen in person before: a "spaceship".
The existing bathroom's tub and shower unit very much resembled something from a galaxy far-far away with its UFO-like appearance, sliding doors, body jets, body sprays, lights, speakers, disco ball (ha! kidding... sort of).... It was unlike anything we had ever seen! When it was first installed, our clients were ecstatic about its many features and gadgets, but over time it proved to be difficult to maintain, clean, and to get in and out of safely. Additionally, the commode placement provided another obstacle in the path from the bedroom to the shower, and the small vanity clearly did not provide adequate storage for their needs.
At the very top of our priority list was to create a more efficient flow in the space that would allow for a barrier-free entry to the new shower area. We knew that removing the "spaceship" would give us the opportunity to create a large, custom walk-in shower, and relocating the commode to the vanity wall would open up the space significantly. This made it easier to plan for a large custom vanity that would give our clients the storage they so desperately needed. Our clients' one request? A rich navy-color vanity! This would be the starting point around which we would build all of our other materials selections.
After solidifying our navy cabinetry, we decided on a crisp white quartz that features a chunky grey-blue veining. This would tie in both our cabinet color and the grey marble tile we had selected as an accent wall in the shower. This bathroom's footprint is long and narrow. By choosing a darker tile for this wall, it helps to visually punctuate the space. Custom wall niches tiled in a marble penny tile provide a bit of sparkle against the otherwise matte finishes.
The star of the show is the custom vanity area we created that provided enough storage to allow our clients to say "goodbye" to the random cabinets and bins they had been using before. Our polished nickel hardware sparkles against the navy color and coordinates with the oversized mirrors we placed above each sink. To provide additional depth, we brought in black finishes in our plumbing fixtures and pendant lighting. To help compensate for the lack of natural light in this space, we installed new recessed lighting throughout and pendant lights over the vanity area that provide additional task lighting. We grounded the space using a water-proof wood flooring that is as warm and inviting visually as it is underfoot.
Our clients are absolutely loving their new primary bathroom. We just so happen to think the results are "out of this world" too! ;)
