We often equate the words "home" and "haven". Both convey a sense of warmth, of belonging, of ease and security. Both are places of retreat. But when there is a disconnect between how a retreat should feel and how it actually does, it can cause more stress than comfort. That was the case for this client's primary bathroom. Not only was this space not at all a reflection of the owner's personality or style, but the functionality was about a two on a scale of one to ten.
The vanity cabinetry was hanging on by a mere thread and did not provide the storage that was so clearly needed. With our client being a "shower person", a bathtub was useless and impractical for her needs. The dated tile, fixtures, and dark paint color brought the vibes in this bathroom way down and in no way created an atmosphere conducive for reducing stress at the end of a long day.
Creating a welcoming place for our client to unwind and truly feel like she was at a retreat was paramount in selecting our finishes for this space. We chose organic shapes and textures that brought some much needed softness to the otherwise "boxy-ness" of the overall footprint. These curves help your eye to move easily around the room and create a sense of serenity and calm. Pairing a soft green shower tile and subtle patterned window treatment with a classic calacatta floor speaks to our client's love of color without being overwhelming. The combination of metal finishes in our plumbing fixtures and other hardware and accessories is classic and provides interest.
The make-up station in the old vanity was never utilized so we maximized every inch along this wall for more practical storage options that better fit our client's needs. We designed this custom built vanity that now includes multiple drawers for just about any storage need, open shelving for easy access to towels, and a hidden appliance pull-out that warehouses hair dryers, curling irons and space for loads of products. We mirrored this style on the opposite wall. The soft taupe color warms up the white quartz countertops and porcelain tile flooring. Textured sconces provide interest against the otherwise polished and feminine finishes. Relaxed roman shades chosen in an organic soft blue pattern provide just the right amount of color and compliment the colored tile we chose for the shower.
By removing the bathtub altogether, we created a far more functional shower experience for our client. Incorporating a leaf pattern marble mosaic in the shower floor and custom niche, it softens the look of the linear subway tile, which we installed up to the ceiling to create the feeling of more space. To truly create a spa-like experience, we decided on a rain shower/handheld combination designed to help wash away the cares of the day. The small custom niche below provides a spot for smaller items like razors or soap and is perfect for propping a foot up on to shave.
