Every project is inspired by each of our clients' unique perspectives and life styles. Our clients in this case are travel aficionados and love to explore new places while enjoying modern comforts. Their home is filled with one-of-a-kind pieces that each carry a story of their place of origin as well as a memory of their time spent there. So, when it came to re-designing their primary suite they wanted it to reflect a combination of all the things that they look for when they go away on vacation: a clean, modern aesthetic where the materials are luxurious and the living is easy. While they love the excitement of traveling to new corners of the globe, their forever home is nestled in a quiet wooded lot located off the beaten path. Their own little hidden gem in need of transformation into a place they could feel like they were on vacation in every single day. When they reached out to Cori Ashlyn Design for help, we were certainly up for the challenge!!
Located between the primary bedroom and bathroom are his and hers closets on either side. Their large doors, lack of organization, and poor lighting made the space feel tight and disheveled. Moving into the bathroom - the existing footprint was choppy with walls separating the dark shower and the commode areas from the gigantic, unused jetted tub that took up most of the space. The single-sink vanity was hardly functional for two and didn't provide the storage that our clients so desperately needed. The tile work had seen better days, not to mention the style was not reflective of the clean lines they mentioned gravitating towards in their travels.
We knew immediately that the floor plan of the bathroom would need a complete overhaul. Physically expanding the space just wasn't an option, so we would have to rework the existing footprint to visually open it up and also give our clients more storage options to help keep clutter under control. Removing the jetted tub and bubble glass window altogether would free up space to relocate the vanity cabinetry and provide additional countertop and storage space. This would also give us the opportunity to enlarge the shower along the left side of the bathroom. We settled on a modern hotel-esque vibe as our inspiration where the finishes are sleek and the amenities are luxurious.
This space is now the epitome of a deluxe suite! Heated tile floors - controlled by a programmable thermostat - welcome you on a chilly morning. The custom tile shower features multiple shower heads, hidden bench, custom niches, and a new transom window to welcome in the natural light. The heated towel rack ensures that a warm towel to wrap up in is just within reach as you step out to get ready for the day.
We selected a natural stone countertop with a fluid pattern to mimic some of the gorgeous landscapes our clients have seen during their travels. Incorporating a single trough-style sink with minimal faucets ensures that the pattern remains the focal point while still providing ample countertop space. The slate-look tile underfoot grounds the room visually and provides contrast against our neutral cabinet color and shower wall tile. By keeping our cabinet door style and hardware minimal, we achieved that clean, modern look we were after. Sleek wall sconces frame the custom mirror and provide additional task lighting. Installing an additional window over the commode ensures there is no shortage of natural light flooding in either.
We mirrored the same cabinetry and hardware in the his and hers closet area. Removing the existing closet walls and installing wardrobe cabinetry and drawers keeps clothing and accessories tucked away and well-organized - a feature often found in luxury hotel suites. We incorporated full-length mirrored doors on one side to bounce more light around and ensure you can have one last peek at your outfit before heading out the door!
Our clients now have their own oasis without ever having to leave home! Although we have no doubt they'll catch the travel bug again soon, coming home will no longer feel like a punctuation mark on their rest and relaxation. Everyday luxury is just steps away and we are so thrilled to have been a part of creating this "hidden retreat" for them!
