Undertaking a home addition project is no small feat. It requires careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of the overall vision. After months of dedicated work, we successfully expanded our clients' beloved ranch style home, breathing new life into their kitchen, breakfast area, laundry, and family room spaces.
For a couple who built their home twenty-five years ago and raised their children within its walls, staying in their cherished abode for years to come was a priority. The existing kitchen had been well cared for throughout the years, but its footprint was small, cramped, and not at all user-friendly. Limited seating options meant that family and friends were dispersed to either the adjacent family room or out to the deck, separating rather than uniting the parties. Another issue: the only access to the outdoors was through the small laundry room. Our clients craved an open-concept plan that would allow easy flow from the family room through to the outdoor spaces, and would provide ample seating for loved ones when they were hosting holiday gatherings.
We decided on a large addition off of the rear of the home that would encompass the existing laundry room and pantry's footprint while physically expanding the kitchen and breakfast areas. Our aim was to design and execute spaces that would harmoniously integrate with the original structure, creating a seamless flow throughout. By selecting timeless and durable finishes, we ensured that the new spaces felt like they had always belonged.
The kitchen, undoubtedly the heart of the home, was the primary focus of the addition. With the family's love for hosting and entertaining during the holidays, it was essential to create a space that was both functional and inviting. The centerpiece of the kitchen is a large center island that exudes elegance and practicality. With its open shelving, it not only offers additional storage but also provides a perfect platform for displaying cherished dish collections. The island's brass feet add a touch of sophistication, making it resemble a beautiful piece of furniture. Custom details like the apron front panel on the sink base, built-in dishwasher, and custom cabinetry pullouts are both beautiful as well as durable and functional.
The slate-colored marble countertops feature beige, cream and silver notes. The stunning movement in the stone became the focal point behind the Italian gas range. Brass and nickel, accents scattered throughout the space, are unified within its two-toned design. Corbels beneath the upper cabinetry, as well as the wide plank vertical paneling backsplash, give a nod to timeless design elements and help cozy up the overall feel.
Nearly doubling the size of the existing kitchen, we gained valuable dining space to quite literally set the table for beloved family and friends to gather comfortably. Large picture windows placed at the rear of the addition draw your eye outside to the beautiful landscaping. We brought the outdoors in by opting for a soothing color palette of moss greens and chestnut brown seen in the custom dining chairs and silk draperies. The large dining table is appropriately scaled, even with both leaves installed, to the dining area. Its rich black stain grounds the space and provides balance to the dark countertops on the adjacent cabinetry.
Intentional details, like the faux-coffered treatment we applied to the overall ceiling, provide additional interest and warmth. A pair of glass lanterns placed over the dining table anchor the dining space without limiting your view to the outdoors.
The laundry room pulls double-duty as a gardener's retreat where our clients can bring in fresh blooms and then propagate their favorites into containers hung over the sink. A task light above, as well as the custom shelf and peg rail make for a cozy place to work. We opted for a more moody vibe by marrying the dark stained cabinetry found in the kitchen's center island with the dark marble countertops. We repeated the vertical wainscoting backsplash and painted it to match the kitchen's perimeter cabinetry. The color complements the tumbled stone-look porcelain floors and keeps the space from feeling too heavy. We continued the apron-front countertop detail on the sink base to provide continuity between the kitchen and laundry room spaces.
Beyond the kitchen, our project extended to revamping the family room, an essential space for relaxation and quality time. We relocated the old corner fireplace to allow the new custom fireplace surround to take center stage in the room. Flanked by custom built-ins, this strategic move not only enhances the room's focal point, but also provides functional storage and display areas. The use of natural stone, warm brass and bronze accents seamlessly connects the family room to the newly expanded kitchen, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere throughout.
Our Worth the Wait Project is a testament to the transformative power of a well-executed home addition. By expanding the kitchen, breakfast area, and laundry room spaces, we were able to provide our clients with a functional, inviting, and timeless environment to continue their long-term love affair with their home. As we wrapped up this months-long endeavor, we couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and fulfillment, knowing that we had contributed to creating a place where countless memories will be made for years to come.
